Matthew AJ Gregory is a NYC-based actor, director, designer, and master of Commedia dell’arte and as the capocomico of the renowned troupe The Department of Fools, he brings brilliant physical comedy to life onstage.
He is a theater artist, educator, and designer whose work explores the intersection of comedy, social commentary, and historical performance traditions. With extensive experience in stage design and dramaturgy, Mathew brings a unique perspective to both classical and contemporary theater. He has worked with a variety of theater companies and educational institutions, using performance as a lens to examine modern civil issues through the playful and insightful framework of Commedia dell’arte. His innovative approach encourages audiences and students alike to see theater not just as entertainment, but as a powerful medium for reflection, dialogue, and cultural exploration.
From teaching at The New School, AADA, NYU, and the Strasberg Institute to performing and directing across the country, Mr. Gregory is one of the most dynamic voices keeping Commedia alive today.
