Manuel R. Cawaling
Executive Director, Inspire Washington

Manny (Manuel R.) Cawaling is a Seattle native, Filipino American arts leader, theater artist, educator, and advocate who has dedicated much of his career to strengthening arts and cultural communities across Washington State. As the Executive Director of Inspire Washington, Manny works to increase access to arts, heritage, and science programs through advocacy, education, resource development, and coalition building. His work connects artists, cultural organizations, communities, and policymakers to help make arts and culture a stronger part of public life in Washington.
Before becoming a statewide advocate, Mr. Cawaling built his career in theater, education, and community-based arts organizations. His experiences have included work with organizations such as the Northwest Asian American Theatre, Wing Luke Asian Museum, and Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute. As a Filipino American born and raised in Washington, his work has also explored the importance of representation, education, and making sure the stories of historically underrepresented communities have a place in the arts.
Through Inspire Washington, Mr. Cawaling advocates for public policies and investments that support Washington's cultural sector. His work highlights an important idea: the arts are more than entertainment. They can strengthen communities, create opportunities for young people, preserve stories and heritage, and give people a way to understand and connect with one another.
On this episode of Curtains Up, Mr. Cawaling joins us to talk about his journey from artist to advocate, why public support for the arts matters, and the challenges and opportunities facing Washington's arts and cultural community today. He also shares his perspective on making the arts more accessible and offers advice for students and young people who care deeply about arts advocacy and want to find their own ways to get involved.
